Description
Rybelsus (generic name: semaglutide) is a new pill-form drug for treating Type 2 diabetes containing semaglutide – the same compound that is used in Ozempic. Rybelsus is an oral tablet version of semaglutide taken daily. Ozempic is an injectable form of the same medication taken once each week.
Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA). GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the gut. It is released in response to food, prompting the release of insulin and a reduction in appetite.Â
In the case of people with Type 2 diabetes, semaglutide works to slow down digestion. This stimulates the increased production of natural insulin. Rybelsus doesn’t work like other treatments of diabetes, that boost insulin levels from external sources (injection or oral insulin).
If you have been diagnosed as overweight with some associated health conditions, or clinically obese, your doctor may prescribe Rybelsus as a weight-loss treatment off-label, along with appropriate diet controls and exercise. A doctor can also prescribe the FDA-approved version of Ozempic and Rybelsus called Wegovy. All three are based on the same generic GLP-1 compound, semaglutide The primary effect of GLP-1 in this mode is as an appetite suppressant.
Dosage
Only the prescribing doctor can determine the proper dose and how the medicine must be taken. Always use Rybelsus according to the doctor’s instructions. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure about your dose or about how to take this medicine.
The recommended dosage is usually one 3 mg tablet daily for the first month. After one month, the doctor will usually increase the dose to 7 mg once a day, and this may be followed by a daily dose of 14mg in the 3rd and following months if blood sugar is not controlled well enough with a dose of 7 mg once a day. It should be taken on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before a meal, and preferably first thing in the morning.
Do not change the dose without consulting a doctor.
